Amazon turns its back on German pay disputes with Polish hirings

Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, is also taking advantage of Poland’s competitive labour costs as it continues to face pay disputes in Germany. Since 2013, the workers’ union Verdi has organised several strikes by Amazon’s German warehouse employees — the latest coming just before Christmas.

Datawatch: tumbling car sales in Russia

The weakening rouble and the recession will cause a 24-per cent contraction in new cars sales in Russia this year, to the levels last seen in 2009. In 2014 new car and light commercial vehicles sales dropped by 10.3 per cent, according to AEB Automobile Manufacturers’ Committee, a lobby group for European businesses which operate in Russia.

Datawatch: renewables take top spot in Germany

Renewables outstripped lignite, the most polluting form of coal, as Germany’s top power source for the first time ever in 2014. This was a big milestone for the country’s energy transition, or Energiewende, which aims to use renewables for 80 per cent of Germany’s energy needs by 2050, and to stop using nuclear energy by 2022.

Datawatch: Inflation in Ukraine hits 14-year high

The conflict in Ukraine has pushed the country’s inflation to a 14-year high. Consumer prices rose by nearly a quarter in 2014 and fruits now cost one and a half times more than a year ago. One of the reasons for the drastic rise in the CPI inflation rate – from 0.5 per cent in 2013 to 24.9 per cent last year – was the government raising higher tariffs on natural gas and other services to fight the deficit.

Daniel Rzasa

I am a financial and data journalist with extensive experience in data-driven reporting and data visualisation, news writing, online journalism (including SEO and social media), as well as managing a multimedia newsroom.

Currently I am a reporter at Citywire's magazine Modern Investor, writing features and data-driven stories on how institutional investors shif away from traditional asset classes into alternative investment universe.

I am also a member and lead writer at the Citywire Global WOW (Who Owns What) project, shortlisted for the Data Journalism Awards 2016 in the category 'open data'.

Previously I worked as rRporter on coal desk at Argus Media in London, Editor-in-Chief at Forsal.pl in Warsaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forsal.pl). I was also selected to participate in the EU Journalism Training at EurActiv.com in Brussels, as well as in the Foreign Correspondents'​ Programme in Helsinki.

In my career I have interviewed Janusz Lewandowski, EU Commissioner for budgetary affairs; Alexander Stubb, Finland's Minister for European Affairs, who went on to become the country's PM; Jan Kulczyk, billionaire, the richest man in Poland; Artur Tomala, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs. I also interviewed managers and CIOs of some of the largest investment companies in the world, including CalPERS, Fonds de Réserve pour les Retraites, Aviva, ERS Texas.

I graduated from City University London with MA in Financial Journalism and the Council of Europe's Visegrad School of Political Studies.
